CORFU. The Albania Overboard Swim is a special event across the straits of Corfu, connecting two countries and two ecosystems.
The Swim is taking place again this year on 31st August and is open to anyone who is fit enough to swim a 2 - 3 kilometres.
Conceived as a sports event that should be both fun for the participants and have a social character, the Albania Overboard Swim is an event that has acquired many passionate participants, most of whom are foreigners living or visiting Corfu. The Swim also carries a message of uniting the two sides of the straits, which were once impossible to connect for political reasons. It starts from the Albanian side (at Examilion) and finishes at San Stefano (AgiosStefanos), Sinies, covering a distance of more than three kilometres.
This year there are two beneficiaries from the fundraising side of the event. The first is the well-known charity for children The Smile of the Child. The second is the newly established Ionian Environmental Foundation, which aims to help protect Ionian Islands nature and ensure their overall sustainability.
At 08:00 on Saturday morning a boat will take the swimmers across to the Albanian coast. Depending on the swimmers' abilities, the time required should be between 50 and 90 minutes.
