ATHENS. Only one of the Corfu MPs took part in the meeting in Athens with the General Secretary for Solid Waste Management Manolis Grafakos.

Only one of the Corfu MPs was at the meeting - SYRIZA MP Alekos Avlonitis. KINAL MP Dimitris Biagis was ill and the ND MP Stefanos Gikas just said he wouldn't be coming. In any case, it is well-known that he doesn't have the best of relations with the SYRIZA MP...

Manolis Grafakos was able, however, to give Alekos Avlonitis a full update on the critical issues:

By Friday the Hellenic Single Public Procurement Authority will have approved FODSA's proposal to transport the waste to Kozani. Mr. Grafakos stressed that there has been a significant delay from the Municipalities in the setting up of the appropriate infrastructure as the first stage in the transportation procedure - transfer stations, Biowaste Processing Units (MEBA) and recycling units in order to reduce the volume of waste.

What is problematic is the inequal level of taxes between the three Municipalities and whether or not there is a way to avoid a dramatic increase in taxes through receiving funding from the Regional Administration.

Confirming what Enimerosi had reported, Manolis Grafakos told Alekos Avlonitis that the Lefkimmi waste bales will also be taken to Kozani. Regarding the Waste Management Facility in Corfu, the international call for tenders is expected to go out at the end of January or beginning of February, with several contractors having shown an interest, and then the procedures will progress as planned.
