CORFU. The new vehicles will be given to all the Ionian Islands – two to each island.

The Ionian Islands Regional Fire Department acquired eight water tankers through ESPA funding. The new vehicles were delivered on Tuesday afternoon by the Ionian Islands Region at an event held at the Fire Department Headquarters in Corfu, in the presence of the new Regional Fire Service Director Dimitrios Georganas and the Corfu Fire Chief Nikos Kolovos.

The features

These are water tankers (4x4) equipped with 4000L water and 300L foam tanks. The driver's cab has two doors and can carry two more crew members in addition to the driver. During the ceremony for the handing over of the vehicles, Regional Governor Rodi Kratsa thanked the Fire Department for offering its services daily and for providing safety to the Ionian Islands residents, especially in crisis situations.

“The donation of the 8 water tankers to all Ionian Islands Regional Units has been made not only to show gratitude but also because we recognise the need the Department has for modern tools, in order to have the best possible results when dealing with fires,” said Mrs. Kratsa, who was pleased to receive a red jockey hat with the Fire Department’s logo as a symbolic gift.

As Mr. Georganas said, the new water tankers will significantly enhance the fire safety of all the Ionian Islands, since they are useful tools in the service of citizens.

The vehicles were delivered in the framework of the ‘Supply of firefighting equipment for dealing with forest fires and floods’ act, which was included in the Operational Programme ‘Ionian Islands’ on 28 September 2017 and was then followed by an amendment to the inclusion decision on 29 December 2020 concerning the schedule.

The act consists of three sub-projects, the first of which has already been delivered. There is still the third one that remains to be delivered, which concerns the supply and delivery of four 10,000L water tankers (6x4). The total public expenditure for all three sub-projects is €3,495,550.
