CORFU. There will be no ferry services on Wednesday 17 April. Teachers and public sector workers will also be on strike.

Corfu workers and will be protesting on Wednesday 17 April as part of the 24-hour general strike declared by the General Confederation of Greek Workers (GSEE).

The strike will involve participation from the Corfu Workers Centre, private and public sector unions, educators, pensioners, as well as the Seamen's Union.

Protesters will gather  at 11 a.m. in front of the Corfu Workers Centre, before marching through the town's main streets.

Demands

They will be protesting about the high cost of living and the low wages - "We want real wage increases, we want our Collective Bargaining Agreements back, and we want them now." The focus of the demands includes wage and pension increases, taking immediate measures to tackle inflation, combating profiteering, reinstating collective labour agreements, as well as identifying and punishing those responsible for the rail tragedy in Tempi.

In a press conference held on Friday morning at the Workers Centre, participants issued a call for mass participation, as a culmination of the large mobilisation on February 28th in the strike organised by ADEDY.

"On Wednesday, there is a nationwide general strike declared by GSEE this time, in which all Unions, Federations, and Workers Centres of the private sector are participating, and some of those of the public sector, because unfortunately, the management of ADEDY did not deem it appropriate to participate massively in the strike on April 17th," stated Stamatis Pelais, President of the Corfu Workers Centre.
