Illegal parking in Corfu Town Centre to be put to an end

CORFU. Bollards made of reinforced plastic are being placed in places where illegal parking prevents the passage of emergency vehicles and buses.
The Central Corfu Municipality Technical Service has begun to place bollards in certain areas of the town centre, in order to avoid confusion on the roads in the future due to illegally parked vehicles.
“The bollards are made of hard plastic reinforced with carbon fibre and they have reflectors. They are not made of simple plastic that a car can step on – this material would cause damage to the vehicle,” Deputy Mayor for Technical Works Nikos Kalogeros told Enimerosi. “It is an attempt to ease the traffic problem in these areas, even temporarily, until the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP), which is in progress, is completed and implemented.”
“In collaboration with the Traffic Police, we have spotted the areas where illegally parked cars often create problems by blocking access to emergency vehicles, such as ambulances and fire engines. In some streets, such as Stamatiou Desyllas and Donatou Dimoulitsa, there are often problems with buses, resulting in the roads being blocked for a long time by illegally parked cars,” he said.
The first bollards were placed at Stefanos Padovas St. in narrow parts or outside house entrances, where illegally parked cars literally blocked the access to people's homes.
Bollards were also placed on Stamatiou Desyllas St. in parts that illegally parked cars usually cause problems to buses and fire engines. Donatou Dimoulitsa St. and Scholemvourgou St. will follow.
“In collaboration with the Traffic Police, we will be carrying out checks in these areas and we will have to be strict when it comes to prohibition of parking,” added Mr. Kalogeros.
