Residents react as Goggakis case takes dramatic turn!
CORFU. The Community Council, the Cultural Society, and Alepou Primary School and Kindergarten Parents and Guardians Association have unanimously decided to organise a mass protest on Monday, November 3, at 4:00 p.m. outside the Diellas supermarket in Alepou.
Mayor Stefanos Poulimenos is reportedly preparing to convene an urgent, high-level meeting with local authorities to coordinate immediate — though delayed — action aimed at averting a public health risk posed by accumulated and decaying animal remains at the Goggakis facility.
The move comes amid growing anger from residents who have been suffering from an intense stench in the area and fear serious health consequences.
According to reports, a heated discussion took place on Saturday evening between PASOK MP Dimitris Biagis and Mayor Poulimenos, with the Mayor of North Corfu, Giorgos Mahimaris, also present. The conversation occurred on the sidelines of a cultural event and led to indications that Poulimenos plans to convene the emergency meeting on Sunday.
Meanwhile, the Community Council, the Cultural Society, and Alepou Primary School and Kindergarten Parents and Guardians Association have unanimously decided to call for a mass protest on Monday, November 3, at 4:00 p.m., outside the Diellas supermarket in Alepou.
“We must all be there to protest the authorities’ indifference to the grave contamination risk facing the entire area. Fifteen days have already passed — children, the elderly, and vulnerable groups are in immediate danger,” the groups said in a joint statement.
According to journalistic sources, the Goggakis company is also expected to issue a statement soon, outlining its current situation and its communication with the Ministry of Environment.
