No firefighting vessel, says ministry
ATHENS. For now, the installation of a fireboat in Corfu is out of the question. The area’s needs are met by the vessels stationed in Igoumenitsa and Patras.
The Ministry of Climate Crisis & Civil Protection responded to a question from the Secretary of the PASOK Parliamentary Group and Corfu MP, Dimitris Biangis, regarding Corfu’s bid to receive one of the fifteen new Rafnar-type fireboats that the Fire Service will procure.
“Two open-sea firefighting and rescue vessels have been stationed at the ports of Igoumenitsa and Patras, with significant operational capacity and autonomy (400 nautical miles), covering the entire region of Western Greece (coasts of Epirus, Ionian Islands, Western Central Greece, Western Peloponnese). They are ready at any time to provide assistance (firefighting and rescue) to any vessel operating in these areas, as well as to any port within these regions that requests their support.”
