CORFU. Beginning with today’s visit by the Minister of Tourism and culminating in the meeting called by the Regional Governor.

A new round of initiatives and meetings on tourism is once again opening on the island, less than a month after the review conference on last season organised by the Central Corfu municipality. From today, Saturday, through next Thursday, successive events and meetings signal the start of the new tourist season.

Today’s proceedings begin with the visit of the Minister of Tourism, Olga Kefalogianni, who is travelling to Corfu. Her programme includes working meetings with institutional and productive stakeholders, also in connection with her presence at the New Democracy local party organisation’s New Year’s cake-cutting event. As announced by the party’s prefectural organisation, the minister will meet with representatives of local authorities, while at 12:00 she will hold a meeting with tourism bodies at the Ionian Academy. In the evening, she will visit Merolia in Kassiopi, and at 8 p.m. she will attend an event at a restaurant in Gouvia.

On Monday, the visit of Kalliope Vetta, MP for Kozani and Tourism Sector Head of SYRIZA–Progressive Alliance, follows. During her stay on the island, she will meet with the Mayor of Central Corfu and the Diapontia Islands, Stefanos Poulimenos, the Deputy Mayor for Tourism, Spyros Chalikopoulos, and the Regional Governor, Giannis Trepeklis.

At 12 noon, she will participate in a meeting of the Prefectural Committee with the participation of tourism stakeholders, at the conference hall of the Corfu Regional Unit. At 7 p.m., she will speak at an open discussion event in the foyer of the Municipal Theatre on the topic: “Problems and prospects of Corfu’s tourism development model.” Residents’ associations and environmental organisations have been invited to attend.

The round of initiatives will conclude on Thursday, 19 February, with a meeting on the same subject convened by the Regional Governor of the Ionian Islands, Yiannis Trepeklis.
