Vandalism of municipal lighting network
CORFU. Recent reports indicate that the network has been repeatedly tampered with in various areas of the town.
(Central Corfu Municipality) A municipal service team discovered acts of sabotage at three points of the municipal lighting network along the Garitsa coastal area on Monday morning.
During the inspection, specific locations were identified where unknown individuals had damaged connection boxes (pillars) linked to the streetlight poles and had cut the cables with wire cutters on Palm Sunday night (see photo).
The resulting blackout in the area was immediately reported on a social media page.
The head of the municipal lighting department pointed out that the sabotage could have endangered human life if someone had come into contact with the exposed cut cables.
Recent reports indicate that the network has been repeatedly tampered with in various areas of the town, without any pre-existing technical issue, such as tripping fuses or breaking padlocks. These areas, plunged into darkness, are also photographed and posted online, often to criticise the municipal service and the town administration.
Due to the increasingly dangerous nature of these incidents, the Municipality is proceeding with filing a complaint against unknown perpetrators.
