CORFU. The full implementation of the European Entry/Exit System increases the processing time for non-EU passengers, raising concerns about delays for summer arrivals at the airport and port.

The full implementation of the European Entry/Exit System (EES) is already creating increased screening requirements at the country’s airports and ports, with Corfu among the locations expected to face pressure during the tourist season.

The new system provides for the electronic recording of crossings by third-country nationals and, in most cases, the collection of biometric data such as fingerprints and facial photographs. This process increases the inspection time per passenger, especially during periods of mass arrivals.

At Corfu Airport, where simultaneous arrivals of flights from the United Kingdom, Israel, and other non-Schengen countries are recorded during the summer months, fears are being expressed over queues and delays at border controls, particularly during peak hours. Similar concerns also exist at the port, especially for routes to and from Albania and for cruise ship arrivals carrying passengers from outside the EU.

The government says it is making use of the option provided by European regulations to temporarily suspend the collection of biometric data at specific locations and during certain periods in order to avoid congestion. However, tourism sector representatives believe the real test will come at the height of the season, when the simultaneous management of increased passenger traffic and new security procedures will place pressure on infrastructure and available staff.
