Temploni: Fire extinguished but questions remain

Reports on the progress of the operation initially referred to a total of five aircraft and two helicopters. Later, when the fire had been brought under control, reports stated that three Air Tractor aircraft (PHOTO) and one helicopter remained to carry out water drops, while the two PZL aircraft withdrew. CORFU. Temploni fire under investigation – Focus on the point of origin, site machinery, fire protection and the June incident

The focus has now shifted to the exact location and circumstances surrounding the outbreak of the fire in Temploni, after it had been extinguished on Tuesday evening. The Corfu Fire Investigation Unit for Arson Offences has taken charge of investigating the causes, although no findings have been announced so far.

According to information that has come to light, the fire broke out at around 3:20 p.m. in a difficult-to-access rural and forested area, outside the Temploni landfill and near the Chondrogiannis recycling facilities. Reports have also referred to the presence of construction machinery in the area, an issue that remains to be clarified as to whether, and to what extent, it forms part of the Fire Service’s investigation.

As of Wednesday morning, neither the exact location of the initial outbreak nor an official estimate of the area burned had been announced. It is also not known whether the site inspection uncovered any evidence pointing to a specific cause.

The fact that the fire broke out in the wider area of the waste management and recycling facilities also makes it important to establish what activity was taking place there at the time. Which machines were in the area, whether any work was being carried out, and how far they were from the initial outbreak are details that could shed light on the circumstances of the incident. Likewise, any footage from cameras at nearby facilities could assist the investigation.

The issue of fire protection in the area also remains open. The extent to which vegetation had been cleared, the existence of firebreaks around the facilities, and responsibility for maintaining the land are questions for the Municipality, Civil Protection authorities, and the respective owners or operators.

The incident is of particular interest because another fire occurred in the wider Temploni area on June 22. On that occasion, too, there was a report of a site where construction machinery was present. There is currently no evidence linking the two fires. Their proximity in both time and location, however, makes it reasonable to ask whether the relevant authorities have identified any common risk factor, or whether the two incidents were entirely unrelated.

Tuesday’s fire prompted a major response, involving 20 firefighters, a team from the 15th Special Forest Operations Unit (EMODE), five fire engines, five aircraft and two helicopters, while the 112 emergency alert system was also activated. The prompt intervention prevented the fire from spreading.
