Man, 22, arrested for telephone scams

CORFU. Following a search of his home and the surrounding area, the sum of 500 euros along with all of the stolen jewellery and items taken from the elderly woman were found and confiscated.
A 22-year-old man was arrested by police officers, following reports from members of the public linking him to a series of telephone fraud cases. He faces charges of repeated and joint fraud, both attempted and completed.
Police, with the assistance of the O.P.K.E. unit, moved swiftly and apprehended the suspect on the evening of Saturday, August 16.
According to the investigation, the man and his accomplices—who are still at large—posed as accountants, attempting to trick unsuspecting members of the public into handing over money or valuables under the false pretext that they were entitled to receive state allowances.
Authorities have confirmed their involvement in at least five attempted telephone scams. In one confirmed case, on the afternoon of Saturday, August 16, 2025, the suspects managed to defraud an 87-year-old woman in Corfu, seizing cash, jewellery, a bank card, and a mobile phone.
A search of the suspect’s home and surrounding areas led to the seizure of €500 along with all the stolen jewellery and belongings taken from the elderly victim. Police also confiscated a private vehicle as part of the investigation.
The 22-year-old has since been brought to appear before the Corfu Public Prosecutor.
