CORFU. Presentation of the activities of the ΄Information Technologies΄ Laboratory.

The highly successful organisation of “Research Day” by Ionian University on Tuesday, March 17, effectively highlighted the breadth and dynamism of the University’s research work. The event, which took place in the specially designed space of the Corfu Port Authority, served as a multidimensional platform for scientific communication.

Research Day concluded with the awarding of the “Markos Avlonitis” prize to young researchers, followed by a lecture from Professor Nektarios Tavernarakis of the Department of Medicine at University of Crete, Honorary Doctor of the Department of Informatics at Ionian University.

The participation of the Department of Archival, Library, and Museum Studies was of particular interest, with its booth showcasing the ongoing project “Digitisation and Documentation of the Weekly Newspaper Enimerosi.” The project is carried out by the ‘Information Technologies’ Laboratory of the Department, under the scientific supervision of the Laboratory Director, Professor Petros Kostagiolas.

The presentation (display and poster) focused on the methodological and technological approaches applied for the systematic digitisation of the newspaper’s issues, as well as the practices that ensure the organisation, preservation, and multifaceted use of the digital content. The extensive research work of the ‘Information Technologies’ Laboratory was presented at the event by Professor Christina Banou of the Department.

The digitisation of the weekly newspaper Enimerosi represents a comprehensive and innovative collaboration between the Laboratory and the newspaper, aiming at the systematic utilisation and promotion of the cultural heritage contained in its issues. 
 
Upon completion, this initiative is expected to highlight the richness of the printed press and provide meaningful insight into its contribution to the shaping of the local and regional public sphere, while also enhancing research opportunities and access to valuable historical material.
