CORFU. Forty-one residents of Kouramades are complaining about the long-standing problems with the village’s water supply and are calling for the issue to be discussed at the Municipal Council. They claim that their request was arbitrarily rejected, despite the fact that water shortages occur every summer.

Forty-one residents of Kouramades are calling for the immediate inclusion of the village’s water supply issue for discussion in the Municipal Council, complaining that for a decade they have been facing repeated water outages and problems that, as they argue, remain without any substantive solution.

According to a statement signed by former municipal councillor and presenter of the issue, Yiannis Pierris, on June 15 a request signed by 41 residents was submitted to the President of the Municipal Council, asking—based on the standard rules of procedure—that the “long-standing poor state of the water supply of the Local Community of Kouramades” be discussed at the next meeting.

The residents describe a situation they say has lasted for more than ten years. They report continuous breakdowns in pumps and pipelines, major water leaks, difficulties in locating faults in the network, and problems attributed to the aging water infrastructure.

They also claim that in recent years the village has been left without water at least twice a month during the summer period, often for periods exceeding three days.

Particular reference is made to the village tank, which, according to residents, has been out of operation since September 2024, when the pressure pump failed. They argue that the tank could provide water for one to three days during outages and generally strengthen the network’s capacity. They also allege that DEYAK has not replaced the pump, despite its reportedly low cost.

The signatories express their opposition to the decision of the President of the Municipal Council not to bring the issue for discussion, instead referring it to DEYAK. They note that the mayor is also the head of the water and sewerage company, while the Deputy Mayor for Water Resources is its vice-president.

They further point out that in the past the Municipal Council has discussed issues concerning DEYAK, such as the wastewater treatment plants in Sinarades and Benitses, and they request similar treatment for the Kouramades water supply problem.

“No further delay is acceptable. We will not tolerate any longer the ‘drip-by-drip’ ordeal imposed on us. We want to live with dignity in our village,” the residents’ statement concludes.
