Ghost Nets underwater clean-up at Gravia islet
CORFU. Meet up on Friday 16 May at the former school in Arillas.
The first presentation of the Ghost Nets project will be for both children and adults, in Greek with English language support, and will take place on Friday, May 16 at 20:30 at the former school in Arillas, hosted by the Arillas Cultural Initiative.
The entangled fishing nets in the sea, known as "Ghost Nets," are considered the deadliest form of marine debris and represent a critically important environmental threat worldwide.
On the island shaped like a mermaid—Corfu, The Mermaid Island©—a local initiative has planned the removal of “ghost nets” from the seabed around the islet of Gravia, just off the beach of Arillas in the island’s northwest, aiming to raise public awareness on this issue.
The first Mermaids in Action event took place in Corfu, the island in the shape of a mermaid, in 2024 at the seabed of Porto Timoni, where over 30 participants joined forces in a symbolic clean-up of the coast and seabed. With numerous volunteers from both land and sea, this initiative conveyed a powerful message of environmental awareness.
This year's action team consists of local fishermen, professional divers, regional volunteer groups, and the 'mermaids' of Mermaids in Action. The initiative will also feature an educational presentation for both children and adults by the Mermaids in Action team, with free admission, hosted by Arillas Cultural Society.
The symbolic clean-up action is scheduled to take place in October 2025, with the underwater clean-up carried out by Mermaids Corfu, Thessaloniki Mermaid Academy, and Corfu Diving Club, based at Agios Georgios Pagon beach.
Actively participating in our initiative are also Arillas Cultural Society and the North Corfu EPOMEA action team.
