Police checks in Kavos at weekend - illegal substances, noise pollution, and driving offences

CORFU. Four people were arrested for violations related to provision of services and products, noise pollution, and possession of a small quantity of drugs.

There were extensive police checks on the night of Saturday, July 19, and into the early hours of Sunday, July 20, in Kavos, South Corfu. The aim was to prevent and suppress unlawful behaviour, ensure the proper operation of businesses, and ensure road safety.

Targeted inspections were conducted by units from the Corfu Police Directorate, the Sub-Directorate for Crime Investigation and Detection, the South Corfu Police Department, as well as the O.P.K.E. and O.E.P.T.A. task forces.

During the operation, four individuals—aged 20, 22, 25, and 44—were arrested for violations related to the provision of services and products, noise pollution, and possession of a small quantity of drugs.

In two establishments managed by the 44-year-old and the 25-year-old, authorities found and confiscated a total of 216 nitrous oxide canisters, 15 gas cylinders, and numerous balloons commonly used for recreational inhalation, which pose serious risks to public health.

A 22-year-old manager of a catering establishment was arrested for playing music at levels exceeding the permissible noise limit, while a 20-year-old man was found in possession of a small amount of unprocessed cannabis.

As part of the same operation, 19 driving offences were recorded, including:

  • 5 for not wearing a crash helmet

  • 3 for drink driving

  • 3 for driving without a licence

  • 8 other violations

Police authorities stated that targeted inspections will continue with undiminished intensity throughout the tourist season, aiming to safeguard public safety and ensure the smooth operation of the area.
