7,010 driving offences in the Ionian Islands in July

CORFU. According to the Ionian Islands Regional Police Department, three people lost their lives on the road in July.

The Ionian Islands Regional Police Department has released aggregate statistical data concerning road accidents and driving offences for the month of July 2025.

Traffic Accidents

In Corfu, Lefkada, Cephalonia and Zakynthos, a total of 38 road accidents were recorded, compared to 32 in 2024.

  • 3 fatal accidents, compared to 3 in 2024

  • 6 accidents with serious injuries, compared to 2 in 2024

  • 29 accidents with minor injuries, compared to 27 in 2024

From the road accidents that occurred there were: 

  • 3 deaths, compared to 3 in 2024

  • 8 people seriously injured, compared to 3 in 2024

  • 39 people with minor injuries, compared to 37 in 2024

The main causes of road accidents were:

  • Driver distraction

  • Violating right of way

  • Not maintaining a safe following distance

  • Speeding

  • Violation of traffic signs

  • Driving on the wrong side of the road

Traffic Policing Actions

As part of traffic policing operations carried out in July, a total of 7,010 driving offences were confirmed, compared to 4,430 in July 2024. These included:

  • 147 for driving under the influence

  • 912 for speeding

  • 1,094 for not wearing a helmet

  • 143 for not wearing a seatbelt

  • 74 for using a mobile phone while driving

  • 14 for noise pollution from vehicles

  • 14 for running a red light

  • 27 for dangerous driving

  • 136 for driving without a valid licence

  • 98 for lack of insurance policy

  • 112 for MOT violations

Additionally, 25 arrests were made, of which:

  • 5 were for driving without a valid licence

  • 9 for driving under the influence

  • 11 for other offences
