“Many of those who made their own small contribution will surely be smiling down from above today…”

This year’s Varkarola was dedicated to the memory of Athanasios Michalas, who served for many years as President of the Lakones Cultural Society, as a small token of appreciation for his contribution to the Society and to our community.

Particular emotion was brought about by the active participation of the local youth, who admirably took over the reins of the cultural events from the older generations. With the trust, love and patience of those who came before them, the younger generation continues to keep the local heritage alive.

As was characteristically noted: “Many of those who made their own small contribution will surely be smiling down from above today, seeing that the flame of tradition remains alive and is being passed into the hands of the new generation.”

The Board of Directors of the Society expresses its sincere gratitude to everyone who contributed to the excellent and safe organisation of the event.

To the musicians, dancers, actors, the boat owners of Paleokastritsa, the technical teams, sponsors, supporters, as well as all the organisations and authorities that contributed to the safe and successful staging of the event.

Special thanks are extended to the thousands of visitors who honoured Varkarola with their presence, proving that culture continues to be a meeting point of connection, memory and creativity.

Special thanks are also extended to:

The Municipality of Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands for its generous financial support, which helped elevate the event, and to the local businesses of Paleokastritsa and the wider Corfu area, which have been long-standing pillars of this effort.

Ionian Islands Regional Authority.

Corfu Port Authority and Paleokastritsa Port Authority.

Corfu Fire Service and the Paleokastritsa Police Department.

The “Alexandros Mastoras” Clinic.

The cooperation of all organisations, sponsors and volunteers ensured the smooth running of the evening and gives the Society the strength to continue with the same enthusiasm for the future of the area.
