Waste removal underway at Goggakis, with 25–30 tons per day
CORFU. The unanimous request of all factions in the Central Corfu municipal council is for a state of emergency to be declared in Alepou.
The Central Corfu municipal council has called for the immediate clean-up of the burned business site and the prompt carrying out of environmental and health assessments in the area.
During Monday’s council meeting, the national government came under heavy criticism from all faction leaders, who accused it of delays and inaction that have allowed the intolerable conditions to persist well into the third week since the devastating fire.
The Fire Department’s investigative report is now eagerly awaited, as it is expected to shed light on both the cause of the blaze and how it spread so quickly.
Residents, who have been voicing their anger and frustration, were represented at the meeting by Xenia Konti, who—speaking ahead of the evening’s protest rally—demanded thorough inspections and the immediate removal of hazardous waste from the site.
Waste Removal Underway
On Monday night, two pallet tanks arrived at the site, filling two trucks that transported waste to Aspropyrgos. The clean-up operation has begun at a rate of 25 to 30 tons per day, targeting the roughly 300 tons of animal residue that remain.
Concerns have been raised, however, about the operation of a pulping machine used to process mixed waste on-site, within a densely populated area. Critics argue that such processing should take place at the destination facility, which is presumably located in an industrial zone and expected to meet environmental and public health safety standards.
