CORFU. The decision mainly concerns the management of animal waste, the prevention of environmental pollution, and the protection of public health from possible contamination or foul smells.

(Central Corfu Municipality) The General Secretary for Civil Protection, Mr. Nikolaos Papaefstathiou, has declared the Municipal Community of Alepou to be in a State of Civil Protection Emergency for a period of three months, until January 16, 2026

The declaration aims to address the consequences of the fire that broke out on October 17, 2025, at the facilities of the company Goggakis AEBE.

The decision primarily concerns the management of animal waste, the prevention of environmental pollution, and the protection of public health from potential contamination or foul smells.

This measure is based on the unanimous decision of the Municipal Council of Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands.

In accordance with that decision, the Mayor submitted a formal request to the General Secretary for Civil Protection, seeking the declaration of a state of emergency in order to:

  • ensure clear guidance from health authorities,

  • conduct air, soil, and water quality assessments, and

  • implement immediate protective measures for residents, including rodent control, pest management, disinfection, and neutralisation of waste residues.

The declaration enables the launch of all necessary actions and projects aimed at safeguarding the population and ensuring the swift restoration of the affected area.
