CORFU. Free Books: Take One – Read It – Offer It

The Municipality of North Corfu is launching a new cultural initiative, emphasising the power of books as a means of knowledge, communication and social cohesion.

With the aim of promoting a love for reading, improving access to knowledge and fostering a culture of giving, the Municipality of North Corfu has established a free book exchange library in Acharavi.

The library is housed in the historic building of the old Acharavi Primary School, a donation by Ioannis Bounias, which continues to serve as a vibrant cultural hub for the local community.

The collection includes books in both Greek and English, which are available to everyone. Residents and visitors alike can take a book, read it, and, if they wish, bring another one in its place—thus strengthening the cycle of giving and solidarity.

This initiative revives an effort in 1995, when the current Mayor of North Corfu, Giorgos Mahimaris, was Mayor of the then Municipality of Thinali, a mobile library was established and inaugurated by the renowned author Alki Zei. Unfortunately, that effort was abandoned in the years following the end of his term.

Today, with a deep awareness of the importance of access to knowledge, the Municipality of North Corfu is once again taking the initiative to promote books and participatory reading culture. This particular action will gradually expand to municipal buildings in the former municipal communities, so that more and more citizens can have easy access to free books.

Members of the public who wish to contribute to this effort can donate books by bringing them to:

  • The Recycling Corner in Acharavi

  • The Recycling Corner in Kassiopi

  • The Recycling Corner in Sidari

For more information about the initiative or to donate books, you can contact:

  • Spyridoula Kokkali, Deputy Mayor for Circular Economy, Environment, and Public Relations: 6978 614699

The Municipality invites everyone to support this initiative — a book can change a day, a thought, a life...
